His early research studied sickle cell disease in ethnic groups. After his degree, Dr. Panigrahi moved to America, specializing in cardiology and lifestyle medicine. His practice lasted forty years. He saw preventable diseases everywhere, heart disease and diabetes most of all. Western diets alarmed him as processed foods fueled illness.
